Why make this recipe?
- Elegant presentation: The upside-down arrangement of the plums at the bottom of the cake creates a striking visual effect, perfect for entertaining.
- Burst of fruity and spiced flavors: The natural sweetness of the plums combined with cardamom and nutmeg results in a refined and comforting dessert.
- Celebrate seasonal fruits: This cake showcases the plums, highlighting their natural flavor and juicy texture for a dessert that is both indulgent and in season.
Preheat the oven to 325 °F (163 °C).
Line the bottom of a 9-inch round cake pan with parchment paper.
In a bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, baking soda, cardamom, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
In another bowl, combine eggs, sugar, vanilla, melted butter, and milk. Mix until smooth. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients and mix until the batter is uniform.
Arrange the plum halves in the bottom of the cake pan, cut side down. Make sure every small gap is filled with fruit. Pour the maple syrup over the plums. Pour the cake batter on top and spread evenly with an offset spatula.
Bake for 50–55 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
Let the cake cool for at least 1 hour on a wire rack before serving.
